Syndrome Sounds was founded in 2006 to independently release the music and publishing of Munich Syndrome. The first release from Syndrome Sounds was Sensual Ambience (with the bonus Electro EP), released August 2006. Previous to this date various digital configurations of the album were available via SoundClick and MySpace.
Syndrome Sounds (also the name of the studio) formally came into being in 2002. A new studio with new technology, the first songs to leave the studio were electro synth-pop in nature.
Many of the songs were works hopped on GarageBand (when it was a platform for new artists to have songs reviewed by peers). While work progressed towards an electro formatted album, a side-trip to Paris and the opportunity to supply soundtracks to a series of short films presented itself.
The soundtracks were then refined and remixed in the studio, becoming the core of the debut album, Sensual Ambience. Opening with the dreamy ambient-tinged “Fragment (of a dream) (quiet)” the album contains 9 tracks of dreamy, downtempo music with a sensuous and warm feel.
The four-song bonus Electro EP includes “Come Out and Plaly (Just for a Day)”, “Murderous (NIMH Mix)” and “Regret” shift course for harder electronic terrain, as well as the introduction of the vocoder.

Electro Pop had its roots in the electronic synth pop with many of the songs started before Sensual Ambience was released. The two earliest tracks to set the tone for the album were “Modern Age” and “Go Away.” Both leaned in towards the electro-clash sound that had revived a purer analog synth format.
While an overall different animal than Sensual Ambience, many of the tracks on Electro Pop were also licensed (“Between Nothingness & Eternity” has been the most licensed track) and songs like “Manifesto” and “Murderous (Bad Things Vocal Mix)” continue to be heavily streamed.

Electronic Ecstasy began as the Electro Pop sessions were wrapping up. Some of the songs on Electronic Ecstasy were completed and considered for Electro Pop. Leaning in more on the electro synth-pop of Electro Pop, there was a bit more “pop” on Electronic Ecstasy. One point being that several of the songs had been written and demoed in the late 80’s.
The biggest point of evolution during the course of these first three albums was the introduction of the vocoder. As each album proceeds, the vocoder has been shaped and blended with the human voice to arrive at a less robotic-but-still-futuristic sound.
With this release three of the album tracks were given an 80’s style “extended mix” treatment: “Electronic Ecstasy (Extended Ecstasy Mix)”, “Always (Alone) (Full Orchestral Mix)” and “Anywhere (But Here) (Here and Now Mix).”

After the two versions of Robotika were released Syndrome Sounds and Munich Syndrome relocated. Once the move was complete two albums were begun simultaneously – Atmospherics 1: Urbania and The World of Tomorrow.
Atmospherics 1: Urbania found Munich Syndrome returning (somewhat) to the premise and workflow of Sensual Ambience: telling a story and narrative with the use of melody, instrumentation and production. Drawing inspiration from a night of exploration in the city the album takes the hard analog sounds of early Tubeway Army with “The Underground” and then going through a wide array of styles from New Wave (“Neon City” “Happy Hour – Swoon“), almost-industrial (“Uptown“), slinky funk (“After Hours – Slink“) and downtempo electronica (“Betrayal” “Heart of the City“).

While the Atmospherics 1: Urbania sessions were taking place, another set of songs were taking shape for The World of Tomorrow. The song “Neon City” became the base for “Friday Nights“, a look back at weekends searching for fun and love in San Francisco. While the title is forward looking, a lot of the album was looking back.

At the close of The World of Tomorrow sessions, the Syndrome Sounds studio went through an upgrade and reconfiguration. With the upgraded studio can an unprecedented amount of activity. Several different projects were started concurrently and it wasn’t until there were over 60 songs in various stages of completion that the next release came into focus – Electro Pop 2.
Initially conceived as a single album, the shifting terrain of the music business, feedback from publishers and other music business insiders suggested a re-think on the length of the songs (basically tighten and shorten) be remixed to better accommodate the ‘new world‘ of streaming.
Using The World of Tomorrow as a jumping off point, Electro Pop 2 now had two full albums worth of material (the first album would be the remixed radio edits, along with five bonus tracks, or what would have been B-sides in an album / singles world, with the second album being the fully extended versions).
